Vikram’s latest Tamil release Cobra was cut by 20 minutes a day after its release, the creators announced in a statement on Thursday. After being slammed by critics and audiences alike for the film’s bloated running time of 3 hours and 3 minutes, the creators made this decision. The new version will be on show in all theaters in South India from Thursday evening. Cobra will be released worldwide on Wednesday, August 31st. The film stars Vikram in dual roles. He plays a genius mathematician/assassin and a hacker. A tweet from the film’s creators, 7 Screen Studio, read: “We heard you. #Cobra is now trimmed by 20 minutes as suggested by filmgoers, fans, media friends, distributors and exhibitors. Will be updated in all screens starting tonight. Watch the film and support it (sic).
The film, directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu, managed to garner a lot of attention, although it was met with mixed reactions €11.7 crore from Tamil Nadu from day one of publication. According to Andhra Box Office, the film deserved it too €3.6 million in Telugu states. According to reports, the first day’s all-India collection was lying around somewhere €18 crores.
Cobra also plays Srinidhi Shetty and former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan, who plays an Interpol agent in the film. Roshan Mathew, who recently starred in the Netflix film Darlings, played the antagonist. The film, which was made on a huge budget, has music by AR Rahman.
Vikram will next be seen in Mani Ratnam’s epic Ponniyin Selvan I, based on Kalki’s novel of the same name. The film will be released on September 30th.
Vikram is also set to make his next debut with filmmaker Pa. to work together with Ranjith. Producer Gnanavel Raja had revealed in his latest interview with some leading Tamil entertainment portals that his next project with Vikram will be big-scale. It is considered India’s greatest 3D film.
