The 79th edition of the Venice International Film Festival is drawing to a close, but they’ve saved one of their most anticipated films for last. BlondAndrew Dominik’s biopic about Marilyn Monroe, starring Ana de Armas, has its world premiere in competition Thursday night.

Based on biographical fiction by Joyce Carol Oates, the nearly three-hour epic explores the Hollywood icon’s public and private life from her troubled childhood as Norma Jeane to her worldwide fame as Marilyn Monroe. De Armas, who was born in Cuba, worked with a dialect coach for a year to prepare.

Blond Also starring Adrien Brody as Arthur Miller and Bobby Cannavale as Joe DiMaggio. Produced by Brad Pitt’s company Plan B, the Netflix film is the streamer’s first film to be rated NC-17 by the Motion Picture Association, meaning no one under the age of 17 can see the film in a theater.

The film will hit select theaters across the US beginning September 16 before hitting Netflix on September 23. It’s one of many Oscar hopefuls starting in Venice, where it’s also one of the films eligible for the festival’s awards ceremony on September 10.
