In the first episode of the Netflix series, Seema removed the nameplate on the front door of her house that read “Khan” and replaced it with one that read “Seema, Nirvaan, Yohaan.” Seema shares Nirvaan, 21, and Yohaan, 11, with her ex-husband Sohail Khan.
Later in the episode, Nirvaan notices the changed nameplate and asks his mother about it. He contradicted the change when urged by Seema to speak out, admitting, “We’re a family of four, all Khane names.” While Seema insisted that was never her motive, Nirvaan added, “It is a bit unnecessary. It doesn’t have to be done. What’s the difference? At the end of the day, you’re still Khan. We’re still Khan.”
Seema replied to Nirvaan, “But you know I won’t be Khan much longer.” When he further asked her to read ‘Khan and Sajdeh’ on the name tag, she explained: “How can I do this, Nirvan? That’s why there’s no last name, it’s the three of us that we’ll always be family, but at the same time Nirvaan, I’m also at a point in my life where I feel like I need to be a step ahead.”
“I’m neither here nor there at the moment. You and Yohan will have this last name, which will not be my last name. I’m still trying to take care of it, which is why I don’t want to be the last name,” she added. Seema also asked Nirvaan if he thought she should move on from this point, and he responded by asking her asked to live her life without worrying about him. She later said to the camera, “I know this is a new chapter in my life and I don’t know how it’s going to be. It’s actually very complicated .”
Seema also spoke about the end of her marriage to Maheep Kapoor when asked if she sees falling in love in the future. She said: “When I got married I thought it was forever. That’s how we’re raised, D-word is like a taboo.” Regarding the impact the breakup has had on her children, Seema said, “What’s more important is that you have two happy parents. Sohail will always be the father of these children. And I’m the mother and nobody can break that bond. But sometimes I feel like my biggest regret is that I stole that family from them. Sometimes there’s a little guilt.”
