Samsung foldable phone with stretchable, wraparound screen seen in new patent filing: report


Samsung has reportedly filed a patent for a foldable phone whose screen can be enlarged and/or wrapped around one hand. According to a report, this could be possible via a controller, a foldable sensor and a foldable screen that Samsung wants to include in this phone. The development comes months after the South Korean company reportedly developed an extendable display using a rolling mechanism. The design is designed to reduce the need for a secondary display.

91Mobiles reports that a patent for the new folding technology suggests it uses a flexible screen that can be extended or wrapped around a wrist. The post also shared the alleged images from the patent, which suggest the foldable display can be bent at a right angle, forming a curved, waterfall-like display.

There is another diagram, which suggests that the screen can be folded 180 degrees to create a semi-circular display area forming a loop so it can be worn on the wrist. This basically means that it could be possible that a future Samsung foldable phone could be worn around your wrist.

The report says Samsung could achieve this versatility via a foldable display and a controller to communicate with a foldable display alongside a foldable sensor. The bend sensor further includes a proximity sensor, a touch sensor, a piezo sensor, and a pressure sensor. The sensor allegedly says that when the screen is bent, it does not lose its display properties due to the bend sensor.

It should be noted that since only the patent has surfaced, we cannot be sure that this design would actually go into production.

As mentioned, the news comes a few months after a patent filed by Samsung showed that the South Korean company was developing an extendable screen that uses a rolling mechanism. This design may have been developed to reduce the need for a secondary display. The patent supposedly suggests that this display could be extended in all directions.
