Natchathiram Nagargiradhu is Ranjith’s sixth feature film. In a refreshing departure from his brand of cinema, which usually talks about the horrors of caste politics, Ranjith’s latest film is about love and its politics, and it’s arguably his boldest work, at once badass and controversial. The main roles in the film are played by Kalidas Jayaram, Kalaiarasan and Dushara Vijayan.

Taking to Twitter, Pa Ranjith wrote: “I am very touched by the appreciation of our #superstar @rajinikanth sir after seeing Natchathiram Nagargiradhu. “This is your best work yet in terms of direction, writing, casting, art, cinematography and music” are the exact words he quoted.” Ranjith and Rajinikanth have collaborated in two Tamil films – Kabali and Kaala.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap Pa Ranjith’s latest Tamil film Natchatthiram Nagargiradhu, which he recently saw at a special screening in Mumbai, had recently been praised by Pa Ranjith. The Dobaaraa director named it his favorite Ranjith film and took to Instagram to review the film in a lengthy post. He said the film is about love and how it must survive over all prejudice and hate.

In his Instagram post, Anurag wrote: “Seen Natchathiram Nagargiradhu last night. The uncensored version. This is a movie that takes place inside Pa Ranjith’s mind. There is order in his chaotic mind. Where so many of his identities hold conversations and clash with each other. They just want to be and in order to be they have to assert themselves and hold on to their base.”

He continued: “It’s a film about love and how it has to overcome all prejudice and hate. Rene in the film absorbs the spirit of Pa Ranjith. This is his most personal work and my favorite Pa Ranjith film. He is the most vulnerable and naked in this film. Special mention to all the wonderful actors and music and cinematographer and editor and all the crew.”
