Actor Kamaal Rashid Khan, popularly known as KRK, will remain in prison in Tweets’ controversial case for the time being as the hearing on his bail request was adjourned to Monday. He was arrested from Mumbai Airport late in the evening of August 29 for allegedly tweeting about actor Akshay Kumar and producer and director Ram Gopal Varma in 2020.
His bail request was due to be heard in Borivali Magistrates’ Court on Friday but was adjourned until Monday as the judge is on leave, Khan’s lawyer Jay Yadav said. While police said his tweets were collaborative and targeted at Bollywood personalities, in his bail pleading filed through attorney Ashok Sarogi, Khan claimed that his tweets were only comments on the film “Laxmi Bomb” (released only as Laxmi) and no insult was meant.
His pleading states that Khan acted as a “critic and/or reporter in the film industry.” He was charged under sections 153 of the Indian Criminal Code (deliberate provocation with intent to cause a riot) and 500 (punishment of defamation) and the provisions of the Information Technology Act.
Earlier, KRK was rushed to a hospital in Mumbai after suffering chest pains following his arrest on Tuesday morning. KRK was sentenced to 14 days in prison by the Borivali court after his arrest for derogatory tweets.
KRK recently made headlines after claiming actor Anushka Sharma was behind cricketer husband Virat Kohli’s “depression”. He wrote in a tweet that she must have “put it in his head” that he is depressed because he is the first Indian cricketer to make such a confession about his mental health. He deleted the tweet some time later after receiving a huge backlash on social media.
