The Tax Intelligence Directorate, Coimbatore on Monday intercepted seven passengers who brought gold in concealment from Sharjah, weighing 3.5kg and valued at Rs 1.83 crores. One person has been arrested in connection with this case.

The arrested passenger was identified as Firoz Rahman from Kozhikode in Kerala.

According to an official statement, the gold that was hidden in the belt, the raw chains and the bracelets has been recovered.

“Based on specific intelligence gathered, officers from the Directorate of Fiscal Intelligence, Coimbatore intercepted seven passengers who brought gold in concealment from Sharjah to Coimbatore through the Air Arabia flight on September 5 in their person. gold which was concealed in the belt, raw chains and bracelets were recovered.In total, the total amount of foreign gold seized is 3.5 kg worth Rs 1.83 Crores. In this case, officers arrested a passenger named Firoz Rahman (aged 30) from Kozhikode whose value exceeded Rs 50 lakhs,” the statement added.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
