UU Lalit becomes 49th CJI

On August 27, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI). The swearing-in ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan under the supervision of President Draupadi Murmu.

Update on cattle smuggling case in West Bengal

Trinamool Congress Leader Anubrata Mondal is in remand and is to remain there for a period of 14 days in connection with the cattle smuggling scam. He was arrested on August 24 and brought before the CBI Special Court in Asansol. His 14-day custody at the CBI will end on the first Wednesday of next month.

Akali Dal alleges Rs 500 crore scam in Punjab excise policy

Amid AAP-BJP brawl over alleged corruption in Delhi liquor policy, Sukhbir Singh Badal of Shiromani Akali Dal claimed Rs 500 crore scam in Punjab excise policy and demanded an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Directorate of Enforcement (ED). The leader of Akali Dal said he would contact the governor of Punjab and ask him to act.

Ghulam Nabi Azad quits Congress

Top Congress party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad announced his resignation. He severed ties with the party by writing a long, five-page memo to interim president Sonia Gandhi. The former J&K chief minister listed a number of reasons for his decision. He became a member of Congress in the 1970s.

Situation of Covid-19 in India

According to data from the Union Health Ministry, India recorded 10,256 new coronavirus cases on August 26, bringing the total number of individuals infected with the virus to 4,43,89,176. The country has reported 68 deaths, bringing the total death toll to 5,27,556. Currently, India’s COVID-19 recovery rate stands at 98.59%.
