Focus on all aspects of the game, says hockey defenseman Amit Rohidas

Indian men’s hockey team defender Amit Rohidas was instrumental in India’s feat of winning the silver medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games held recently.

The 29-year-old defender believes he still has a lot to improve ahead of a busy season.

“Last year was bronze at the Olympics and this year a silver at the Commonwealth Games, so it’s been a wonderful journey so far. I was very lucky to represent my country and win medals on the biggest stages. I think there is still a long way to go and there is a lot to learn and improve ahead of a busy season,” said Amit.

The Indian team lost 0-7 to Australia in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games final. Reflecting on the campaign, Amit said: “We did pretty well overall in the tournament but I think we could have done better in the final. We’ve made a few mistakes and failed to execute our plans, but there’s no point in dwelling on the past. We focus on the lessons we learned from this match and our overall campaign.

The Indian team is currently preparing for the upcoming FIH Men’s Hockey Pro League 2022/23 games against New Zealand and Spain which are due to start on October 28 in Odisha.

Speaking on the team’s focus at SAI’s camp, Bengaluru, Amit said the team is focusing on all aspects of the game.

“After returning to camp, we looked back on our performances at the Commonwealth Games and started training with a new approach. From defending to finishing to our fitness, we are currently focusing on all aspects of the game,” he said.

Amit, who also managed the team in the previous FIH Hockey Pro League season, added: “We are looking forward to another FIH Hockey Pro League season. This is a new challenge and a new opportunity for us. We will be playing our opening games at home, so we would like to take advantage of that and have a good start to the season, which will eventually help us prepare for the 2023 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup.”

The FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup Odisha 2023 Bhubaneswar – Rourkela pool draw will be held on September 8 in Bhubaneswar. Expressing his excitement, the player from Sundargarh, Odisha said: “We are really delighted with the World Cup pool draw. It also means that the flagship event is not far away, we have a few months left to prepare.

“We will have to prepare well and give our best, no matter who we face in the World Cup. The focus will be on ourselves. It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to play the prestigious event at home in front of our fans for the second time in a row, and we want to be fully prepared for that,” he concluded.

India’s men’s hockey team will play their 2022/23 FIH Hockey Pro League matches against New Zealand and Spain between October 28 and November 6.
