Computer and tablet shipments will drop globally over the next 2 years

Global traditional PC shipments are expected to fall 12.8% in 2022 to 305.3 million units, while tablet shipments will drop 6.8% to 156.8 million, according to a new report.

Inflation, a weakening global economy and a sharp increase in purchases over the past two years are the main causes of the lower outlook, according to the IDC report.

“Long-term demand will be driven by a slow economic recovery combined with an enterprise hardware refresh as support for Windows 10 comes to an end. Educational deployments and hybrid working are also expected to become a revenue-generating mainstay. additional volumes,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers.

Further contraction is also expected in 2023 as consumer demand has slowed, education demand has been largely satisfied, and business demand is squeezed out due to deteriorating macroeconomic conditions.

The combined PC and tablet market is expected to decline 2.6% in 2023 before returning to growth in 2024, according to the report.

“With economic headwinds gathering pace, we expect deteriorating consumer confidence to drive further contractions in the consumer market over the next six quarters,” added Linn Huang, vice president of research, Devices and screens.

“Economic recovery in time for the next major refresh cycle could propel some growth in the later years of our forecast. Although volumes are not reaching pandemic peaks, we expect the consumer market to move towards higher end segments of the market,” Huang added.
