Petrol and diesel prices remain firm across all Indian states on Sunday (August 21). It has remained the same for over two months now, except in Maharashtra. On July 15, the state saw a reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) after the Maharashtra government reduced the retail price of petrol by Rs 5 per liter and the cost of diesel by Rs 3 the liter.

In May, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the reduction of excise duties. The cost of petrol fell by Rs 8 per litre, while diesel was reduced by Rs 6 per litre.

Today, petrol and diesel prices in the nation’s capital are holding steady at Rs 96.72 per liter and Rs 89.62 per litre, respectively. The revised price of petrol in Mumbai is Rs 106.31 while diesel is Rs 94.27 per litre. Petrol rate in Kolkata remained stable at Rs 106.03 per liter and diesel is at Rs 92.76. In Chennai, petrol and diesel prices are Rs 102.63 and Rs 94.24 respectively.

Fuel prices are determined by multiple factors and they are regularly revised in the country by the public sector oil marketing companies, taking into account factors such as crude oil prices in international markets and exchange rates. . Gasoline and diesel prices vary from state to state as retail prices are finalized after the state has added local taxes, VAT, and freight charges, among others.
