Abiola Dauda Brace takes Mohammedan Sporting to semis with win over Kerala Blasters

Kolkata giants Mohammedan Sporting (MDSP) overwhelmed a young and talented Kerala Blasters (KBFC) 3-0, in the first quarter-final to become the first team to advance to the semi-finals of the 131st IndianOil Durand Cup at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) on Friday.

A brace from Nigerian debutant Abiola Dauda and a first-half strike from Sk. Faiaz ensured a smooth run to the last four for the Black and White Brigade.

MDSP, despite missing key players like Faslu and Abhishek Halder through injury and suspension, were on their feet from the start and it seemed like a matter of time before they scored. Marcus Joseph himself missed a few headers before setting up for the opener.

Credit should go to Azharuddin Malik for holding onto the ball in the midfield of the Blasters’ half and then playing against Safiul who played past Abhash Thapa. He found Marcus to his left and the Trinidadian launched a dangerous low cross in front of goal. Among two rushing MDSP strikers, Yumnam Gopi missed it but Faiaz was within range to head home easily.

The Blasters didn’t let the goal rule their minds though and continued to try and get in the game creating a few good chances. The EQ didn’t quite come their way.

After Gourav Kankonkar did well to create space outside the box and let one fly over the MDSP bar, Marcus created a goalscoring opportunity exactly like the first, but this time Faiaz was slow to react to the situation.

Kerala were soon on the counter with general midfielder Vibin Mohanan finding Md. Aimen inside the box on the left. The striker dodged a defender to create space to his right and fired a shot into the corner, but was too weak to disturb Zothanmawia.

The half ended with the MDSP in front but who needs to do more. Andrey Chernyshov made his intentions clear when he brought on Kean Lewis and Abiola Dauda in place of Gopi and Tajik Nuriddin Dabronov at half-time. The new recruit of the Nigerian striker was in his debut at the MDSP.

Dauda met the ball deep and with the keeper and an open goal in front of him, missed his connection and the volley went over.

He didn't have to wait long for his first goal, however, when the same Marcus-Faiaz combination, this time played him inside the box between two defenders, just a minute later. The Nigerian bluffed the keeper, taking him out of the equation and shooting towards the goal. Centre-back Marwan tried to save the day but all he got was a touch before the ball entered the goal. The insurance has been delivered.

The Blasters kept their chins up and kept trying to find an opening. Roshan Gigi was set up for a good chance in the 74th, but Zothanmawia was up to it again.

It was then all over in the 84th minute when Marcus took out Abhishek Ambekar this time on the left wing. The left winger headed for the touchline and delivered a perfect cross for Dauda to head in.

Wayne Vaz actually missed a keeper from close range in the final seconds of the game, but that game was long over. .

Read allLatest sports news and recent news here
